Program Note
[IVUL] is a far-fetched, extraordinary, semi-autobiographical tale. It tells the story of a boy, Alex, that moves out onto the roof of his family manor house when his father wrongly accuses him of molesting his sister Freya. His petty rebellion will not only destroy him, but the family he loves as well. His father Andrei falls ill with a mysterious sickness, and his mother Marie takes her comfort in alcohol. His twin sisters offer him the most bizarre form of comfort imaginable and Freya flees to Russia. In a film that is part nightmare, part fantasy, Alex vows never again to step on land, land that is rendered as mysterious and dangerous. [IVUL] unfolds in a surreal world of its own, with its own laws and customs, and asks important questions about identity and what it takes to make fragile family structures function. Using archival material to leap from plot point to plot point as part of a wholly unique mise en scene, Andrew Kotting forges one of the most singular explorations of family in recent memory.
