Based on the play by Judith Thompson, [I Am Yours] is a domestic melodrama on the surface, but underneath lays a searing story of betrayal, rivalry, and obsession. Martha’s marriage to Jack is crumbling, and because of that she allows herself to be seduced by Arthur, an ex-con and local janitor. After it’s discovered she is in fact pregnant, things take a turn for the bizarre and emotionally charged. Jack tries to win her back and Arthur and his mother Irene become fixated on the child’s fate. But at the film’s crux are Martha’s pregnancy and her turbulent relationship with her sister Alice ? whose own personal life is disastrous ? who decides to lend an unwelcome hand as well. Mariusz Grzegorzek has fashioned an intimate psychological portrait from more harrowing source material, and distilled the story down to one of our constant search for love, and dignity. Grzegorzek’s interpretation of Thompson is focused on self-exploration and reconciling with one’s own emotions, and the struggles that go hand in hand with love in all its forms.
