Program Note
Jacques is the surly, heart attack prone owner of a dive bar. After yet another coronary, he meets Lucas in the hospital, a homeless man despondent beyond repair. With an eye to passing on his legacy, Jacques takes Lucas under wing, attempting to make him over into a lasting version of himself, complete with bizarre rules to live and work by. When April, a drunk, lost flight attendant with a fear of flying walks into the bar and their lives, Jacques and Lucas’ budding friendship is put to the test. Once again focusing on the willfully marginalized, director Dagur Kari uses his unlikable, borderline irredeemable outsiders to remind us not to lose sight of our common humanity. Jacques is hopelessly un-socialized and aggressively disagreeable, but as rendered by Bryan Cox, he is uniquely charming. He is also our window into how we collectively relate to the unseemly personalities among us and how they are included or excluded from the mainstream.
