Program Note
“The film tells a story of sister’s love. The main drama is based on an intimate line of the sister’s relationship with the dark history, however, there is an important level of social reality. Dublin is used here as an universal example of any other big contemporary European city dealing with the problems of clash of cultures, immigrants, national stereotypes and other economic?political issues. We perceive the reality through Alzbeta′s experience as a girl from “the other side.”” ? Mira Fornay
Director Mira Fornay weaves a story of a woman’s social and sexual maturation within a narrative about her trying desperately to establish a life away from home without the help of her older sister. Beneath the surface of Alzbeta’s relationship with her sister Martina is a current of jealousy and bitterness that informs Alzbeta’s decisions as she strives for the middle-class life she is convinced she should want. [Foxes] unfolds from Alzbeta’s point of view, focusing on the connections she makes between sex, love, betrayal and family?connections that ultimately lead to forgiveness and redemption.
