In [Father of My Children], Mia Hansen-Løve explores the consequences of a desperate but devastating act by a man on his family. On the surface Gregoire is a successful film producer with a family he adores. But beneath the glossy exterior is a man overwhelmed by a fear of failure that eventually leads him to drastic measures. As Gregoire’s wife, daughters, and previously unknown son illuminate parts of Gregoire’s life as they cope with his death a partial portrait of the man is formed, as well as one of a struggling film industry as his wife attempts to carry on his legacy. At the film’s conclusion, as with a real suicide, viewers are left with as many questions as they began with.
