Loosely based on true events, [Entre Nos] is a study in the inherent resilience of humanity and one woman’s ferocious battle to keep her family together. It is also casts a cold eye on the quest for the so-called American Dream and the occasional cost of that dream in dignity and security. In what has become a sub-genre in itself?the immigrant story?directors Gloria La Morte and Paola Mendoza pull rich and believable performances from the leads, helping the film transcend its type. After Mariana (played by co-director Mendoza) arrives in New York from Colombia to join her husband, he abandons her and their young children in the city to seek work elsewhere. Mariana and her children’s resulting struggle for simple survival as well as their humbling attempt to lay roots down in a new and intimidating place may be a familiar story, but in [Entre Nos] it is a graceful and, ultimately, hopeful one.
