Program Note
During World War II, young men in Luxemburg were forced to choose either one of the following: to be drafted involuntarily and fight for the Nazis, or to hide inside a coal mine at the price of his parents’ sacrifice. Francois, whose father was pro-German, chose the latter and started a difficult life underground with communists who did not trust him.
The film shows the resistance of Luxembourgian under the Nazis from the perspective of the bourgeoisie. Rather than focusing on the traditional resistance movement or the inhumane violence of Nazis, the film focuses on different forms of underground resistance in detail. Suffering between the comfort that can be promised by becoming pro-German and resistance that has to endure internal dispute may be the portrait of ours when we face tough choices in our lives.
