Program Note
Greece now has its own version of the Romanian film [4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days]. Grabbing the grand prize at Un Certain Regard of Cannes this year, this film brought cinematic pride to Greece. There is a family. The father looks like a dictator, and the mother a typical queen, but they have two fragile daughters and a prince. They keep their lives isolated from the world according to the laws of their father. And another woman sometimes enters the world to satisfy the prince’s sexual desire. Due to the woman, an outsider, the family bond starts cracking, and eventually all comes to the end.
As a bitter tale toward repressive systems, this film is a hardcore family drama combined with George Orwell’s [1984] and a play by Beckett, or something from IONESCO’s Theater of the Absurd. Not only the narrative, but the visuals of the film are extremely sensational and unconventional. Other infamous family dramas like [The Royal Tenenbaums] don’t even get close to it. As a controversial text opens discussion for liberation and discovery, this extraordinary film stands out.
