Program Note
“Like many young people his age, he wanted to change the world, but Dede was without a doubt the biggest idealist, dreamer and poet of us all. The one who walked taller than anyone, who rallied multi-generational crowds using his art and talent and who burned white-hot, scorching everything in his path, even his own existence.” ? Jean-Philippe Duval
In 2000, prominent Quebec singer Andre “Dede” Fortin committed suicide by seppuku in Montreal. Rather than dwell on the facts of his death, director Jean-Philippe Duval delves into the mind of a great artist in the year up to it while writing the album that would be his swan song. An inspiration for an entire generation of Quebecois musicians to come, Dede was haunted by the pressure to create and his own sensitivity, an element that is unconventionally investigated. Duval jettisons linear standards and in doing so conveys the scattered mindset Dede was struggling with in his last year. Duval was acquainted with the man, making Dede a personal film that introduces the world to a lost genius.
