Program Note
Buenos Aires’ 1994 AMIA bombing provides the backdrop for this story of a young woman with Down syndrome and her quest for understanding in its aftermath. That July morning is a normal one for Anita and her mother at their small stationery shop; she stocks the shelves and her mother goes to the bank. After a car bomb goes off in front of the Jewish community center, Anita walks out of the shattered shop and into the streets and is confronted with disaster. She decides she needs to find her mother. Sure that she’ll return at three o’clock, Anita begins a heartbreaking search, trapped in time like the store’s broken clock and the rest of the country. Director Marcos Carnevale never fixates on Anita’s Down status, instead, he uses her hopeful, baffled gaze as a way to relay the chaos of the city after the tragedy and the lingering questions of “Why?” Anita’s emotional voyage also brings the bonds that we share?or don’t share?into sharp relief with subtle strokes.
