Program Note
Adama, who achieved accomplishment as a scientist in France, returns to his motherland after fifteen years when he received a letter saying his grandmother was in critical condition. His grandmother and sister, Aicha, greet him, but there is subtle tension in the atmosphere. After finding Aicha’s practice of prostitution in the street, he looks for the pimp and falls into the maze of Dakar. [The absence] is a story of wandering. The main character struggles between his promising future in a developed country and his past from a poor motherland, and he also struggles with his love-hate relationship toward his sister. This film is a “schizophreniac film” which touches on territorial and psychological domain which Africans have faced through the history of colonization, the family, and their struggles. Suspense-rising music and the plot which demands the solution of the problem both create a unique thrill. The struggle of the main character in this excellent work will not be easily forgotten. The self-examination of the director, who was born in Senegal and has dual citizenship in France and Guinea, is evident in the film.
