Andrzej Wajda turns his camera toward the subject of death in his latest film, [Sweet Rush], a triptych that connects an adaptation of a short story by Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz (a Wajda favorite), a mini-documentary about making the film, and a moving tribute to longtime Wajda collaborator Edward Klosinski, the recently deceased husband of the film’s star, Krystyna Janda. The filming of Iwaszkiewic’s story was interrupted when Klosinski fell ill and Janda dropped out of the production, and it is her monologue, written by the actress herself, that binds the film at its core. The influence each narrative strand ? much of it real life ? has on the other is evident in the final product, as sections are woven together to create a larger whole. The fiction of the film involves the terminally ill Marta, struggling to deal with the death of her sons in World War II by entering into a tragic relationship with a younger man. Complemented by footage of Wajda and Janda discussing the script, ultimately it is Janda’s quietly conveyed sorrow that gives the film its emotional heft.
