Program Note
In the early part of the 20th century, New York’s Ellis Island was the gateway to the Promised Land, the first port of landing for generation after generation’s immigrant journeys toward the ideal of a better life. One hundred years later, Europe has become the destination for the same kind of exodus. In Goran Paskaljevic’s [Honeymoons], two young married couples, one from Albania and one from Serbia, see their hopes and dreams crumble under the weight of the past as they try and navigate the expectations and illusions of Hungary and Italy. Vera and Marko and Maylinda and Nik all get stopped at the border when they fall under suspicion in a soldier’s death. The film is an Albanian-Serbian co-production, and that in itself is notable when the lingering tensions between the two countries over Kosovo are taken into account. But the simple story about the two couples and the price they must pay for others’ politics works as a powerful metaphor for reconciliation and tolerance.
