Program Note
Elias left his motherland Greece and got on a boat to Paris; on the way, he threw himself into the ocean to avoid the police. Coincidently sneaked into a resort, he hangs out with wealthy Westerners, and finally through ups and downs, he enters his ‘Eden,’ Paris. The film features a rough travel log from Aegean Sea, where the Western civilization began, to Paris, where the Eiffel Tower stands. It is somewhat of a self-portrait of Gavras himself, who is from Greece and now works in Paris. Through the main character who has his ups and downs like the wandering of Ulysses, the film shows the reality of what illegal immigrants face when they come from the ‘East’ to the ‘West.’ Consciousness of a mastermind who is known for his political film touches on the problem that Europe is experiencing with his attachment to the motherland, the birthplace of western civilization.
