In [The Dust of Time], Greek master Theo Angelopoulos weaves the story of one family with 20th century history and brings the socio-political landscape of the time into relief. Typical of Angelopoulos, the film is a lyrical and visually engrossing post-modern rumination on the self. A is a filmmaker shooting a film about his family when his daughter vanishes. Angelopoulos renders the story by blurring the line between the past and the present, between the journey of A’s parents with the search for his daughter. Eschewing traditional narrative structure, the film falls into an almost purely visual language, spanning the globe and in doing so creating a visual poetry. Angelopoulos also makes a conventional connection to the characters difficult, demanding viewers piece together each story from the fragments that are offered up. What comes of it is a deeper mediation on memory and realization of it in the present.
