Program Note
Jules, a mailman who likes opera, secretly records Cynthia Hawkins’s voice at a concert. Two unknown Asians try to steal his tape. On the other hand, as a prostitute takes a tape related to the chief of the police station, things go wrong; Jules runs into the situation tangled with gangs and police. It is the first feature film by Jean-Jacques Beineix, known for his so-called ‘Nouvelle Image’ of France in the 80s, and a historical cult film which is considered to have established a cornerstone of film aesthetics with artificial stage and colors. It presents a rare opportunity to meet the mastermind and his masterpiece of great scale with superb colors and the voice of a ‘diva’.
