Program Note
Jo Pil-seong, a rural detective, is an unrecognized husband, often blamed by his older wife for gambling. Despite her being hard on him, he steals money from her to bet on bull butting. Fortunately, he chalks up an unexpected win, but his luck, by no means, lasts long because his money gets snatched by an unprecedented absconder, Song Gi-tae. As Pil-seong’s colleagues don’t believe that he encountered the legendary prison breaker, he determines to give a chase. The chase grows condensed into a heated confrontation with their egos at stake.
Referring to some Korean detective movies like [Memory of Murder] (2003, Bong Joon-ho) and [The Chaser] (2008, Na Hong-jin), the filmmaker Lee Yeon-woo never misses his unique sense of humor. A rural detective’s fight for his self-affirmation provides introspection on the existing genre as well as a way to reconfirm popular interest. (LEE Sang-yong)
