Program Note
Here are two islands. On Bam Island located on the Han River lives Mr. Kim, a suicide attemptercastaway. On the other island is Ms. Kim’s home. She casts herself adrift for some reason. One day, she discovers the castaway. She puts a message into an empty wine bottle, letting him know she exists. Mr. Kim, in turn, changes ‘HELP’, which he himself wrote in the sand, to ‘HELLO’ so that she will know he got the message. They begin to convey warm regards, making slow progress towards each other. Now, their longing for each other grows desperate. Perhaps, the two Kims have no one who shows any interest in them. What this all means is the sign of absence. Not only does this film depict city dwellers desiring recognition and getting out of their own homes in a hilarious fashion, but shows originality in spreading imagination’s wings despite spatial confinement.
