Program Note
Set in the village by the sea in Malaysia, this love story is simple and yet somewhat deep. Following the love story between a teenage boy and a girl, one can realize that it is not much different from that of their parents. Its narrative reflection, which reminds one of scenes that connect two stories of different generations, from [A One And A Two] by Edward Yang, shows that the director pondered how to relate and show the story in depth. The characters’ life in this film may look new to people who are used to urban life, but it shows natural beauty and grief, which derive its originality. Ah Fei, who sells frogs, lives with his father Ah Kau. Father and son silently maintain their bonds. Ah Kau forecasts his close death after reading his palm. He looks for his love attempting to seek his last happiness. Ah Fei, on the other hand, hopes to get married with Lily. However, an unexpected accident occurs. Will he make the same kind of mistake as his father? [Woman on Fire Looks for Water] is a personal take on love, desire, compassion, and above all forgiveness.
