Program Note
Skinny as a reed and with tousled hair, teenager Ryo Kawai feels like he’s at the edge of a cliff. He lives alone in a house with no electricity, water or gas, and has just been fired from his work. He can’t go to school because he can’t pay the tuition, and his dream of becoming a soccer player is just that ? a dream. His mother died after leaving two months worth of hospital bills and he can’t even pay for her funeral. This is why he makes up the unusual mystery case of ‘stealing his mother’s corpse.’ The dry and vague narration that recreates the prologue really does nothing to explain the film. [Where Are you?] is armed with silence, and with the face of a boy in distress being the theme itself. Above all, this film tries to convey the ‘sense’ of hunger rather than the ‘feeling’ of sorrow. The camera is close and vivid enough to capture the sounds of breathing, and is also cold and ethical. In retrospect, the long song that plays over the solid background in the opening sequence is the only comfort in this film. (KANG So-won)
