Program Note
Laila has a talent in writing, likes writing lyrics, and crushes on a guy of the school indie band. Her physical disability doesn’t keep her from whatever she likes to do, however, Laila is being hurt by those who pity her seeing only her disability and not her talent. She decides to go to a graduate school in the US to start a new life. Indeed, America is a new world for Laila. There, she meets an Indian-American friend called Khanum, a fiery activist who is visually impaired, and falls in love with
her. One day, Laila hears that her mother, who went back to India after staying with her in the US, is sick. Laila then decides to visit India with Khanum. Before Laila’s parents, they pretend to be just friends but their romance can’t be hidden so easily. This is a film that Bose directs ten years after her impressive debut feature Amu(2005). This touching coming-of-age film depicts a woman’s journey to find her own identity. With its love story, sophisticated style and attractive characters, the film considers the love and sex of a woman with a disability. (KIM Young-woo)
