Program Note
[Sun Spots] deals with the imperfect love of a young couple set in a small town in Southern China. A boy living in a boring life becomes a contracted gangster near the city. One day he meets a girl, who sleeps by the riverside after breaking up with her boyfriend, and then oddly starts to live with her. She doesn’t love him and treats him only as a temporary consolation, but he loves her and attempts to get closer. One day as the boy has to escape from the town due to the incidents he was involved, he learns that the girl is back with her ex-boyfriend and then follows them. The landscapes of the city and the village on fixed shots are as sharply contrasted as the different attitudes about the two protagonists’ love. The film lays in deep focused shots the mere appearances of the two people from an observer’s perspective. Their relationship is visually welldepicted as the stories unfold on the screen which makes full use of the compositions in the foreground and the background of the picture. (PARK Jong-Ho)
