This seems to be a story about ghosts, but it’s more of a mystery. In this film, forests hold a special meaning. Once upon a time, a woman was attacked by two men in a forest, and the two men were killed. No one knows who killed them. The forest forever keeps its silence. Nop, a photographer, comes to this forest to take pictures but goes missing. His wife May returns home in despair, but finds her husband at home, acting as though nothing has ever happened. However, he does not seem to be the same Nop as before. Pen-Ek Ratanaruang wants to relay the message that we live in a world along with spirits, yet can’t always perceive this fact. The panning of the camera with the languid movements of someone waking up from a nap creates a unique atmosphere in this film. It is scary on one hand, but on the other hand, it’s as warm and snug as a mother’s hug. The forest is, after all, not a space for evil spirits, but a place that heals pain. (KIM Ji-Seok)
