Yermek Tursunov, who made a name for himself as a reporter and scenario writer, now makes his dazzling directorial debut. The film takes place in the ancient times when people could still understand and communicate with animals and the Turks believed in the heavenly god, Tengri, instead of Allah. At the start of the film, Kelin is dressing herself up to get married. Her father is sitting with two men and trying to strike a deal to sell her off to the highest bidder. As the one who carries on a family’s lineage, the woman was thought of as a mysterious being and also an expensive asset. Eventually, Kelin gets sold to Baktash who paid the most, instead of her lover, Mergian. The grief in parting is brief. She starts to enjoy a new life and love with Baktash, but their lives start to get tangled up like a bobbin full of knotted thread. With the beautiful Turkish scenery in the background, the film explores a time when women could fully show their wisdom and strengths. It is a mystic allegory film that deals with death, love and desires, sex, and rules of the ancient times. (Jay SON)
