Program Note
Upon graduating from college Betik returns to his hometown and works at his family’s karaoke club, although his mother doesn’t seem to welcome his return. He gets a girlfriend, Anisah, and works part time making video backgrounds for the karaoke machine. Betik comes to find that his mother decides to close the place and leave town. Just like people come to the karaoke bar to refresh their boring lives, Betik returns home for easy way out. But, his dream strays from the reality as same as hard work and severe life of the town is dismissed by the surreal video background full of love and dreams. Contrasting carefully controlled karaoke scenes with the documentary look of vivid landscape of the town, this film portrays the wandering of youth who lost his way. This feature film debut by Chris Chong Chan Fui from PIFF Asian Film Academy was invited to the Directors Fortnight at Cannes this year. (CHO Young-jung)
