Program Note
Sometimes the law that protects humanity becomes a tool which destroys it. [Judge] tells that we can make injuries worse through revenge conducted in the name of the law and are completely cured only by forgiveness through the psychological changes of a judge named Lao Tien. Among the characters are a judge who lost his daughter by a stolen car, a woman who suffers from her dying lover, and a car thief sentenced to death, all of whom try to not only save their own lives but also take one another’s from different reasons. Have you ever lost someone you love? This is the most important question that the director asks in the film. [Judge] emphasizes the fact that the law is capable of putting on human faces only when we understand each other’s positions, and in such cases that we enforce laws and are enforced by them. From the beginning the film consistently goes forward with flat compositions, like the simple and hidebound characteristics of the protagonist. Despite the risk of falling into sentimentalism, the director delivers the subject matter very persuasively, with well-treated emotions and moderated camera movements. (PARK Jong-Ho)
