Program Note
This film tells us how complicated and subtle, pretentious and empty human relationships are. Duyen and Hai are newly married. Duyen believes that she truly loves Hai, but soon realizes that’s not true. Duyen’s girlfriend Cam is filled with jealousy in her belief that she was taken from her, and tries to get her to fall for another man, Tho. Meanwhile, Vi, who loves Tho, finds about his and Duyen’s relationship and kills herself in despair. Such complicated and entangled relationships stem from the unattainable desire and loneliness each harbours. Director Thac Chuyen Bui says that this is human nature. Purity and incompetency, love and hate, desire and morality ? these are all elements that slowly surface from the complicated relationships between the characters. The dissatisfaction that is fostered by Hai’s purity without any desire throws Duyen into hell caused by her physical desires, and rather than putting this up to the moral compass, Thac Chuyen Bui makes it an investigation of human nature.
