Program Note
This 3D film by Jean-Luc Godard, famous for his experimental and esoteric films, is naturally very difficult to explain. Here is an attempt, albeit a fragmented one. While a married woman and a single man are having an affair, a dog runs around. The woman’s family is shattered to pieces. When seasons change, the separated couple is reunited, and the dog is with them again. A new movie begins, and this time, the screen is filled with metaphors rather than humans. A dog barks, a baby cries. Many of those who watched this film at the Cannes Film Festival wearing the 3D glasses complained of headaches afterwards. I almost wonder whether the director intended to share this headache to tell the pain in the story through the unfocused and shaky images. But who could ever defy this master director? Even just the presence of Godard is precious for his contributions to the art og cinema. (RHEE Soue-won)
