Twelve-year old Gelsomina is the oldest of four girls living on a bee farm with their father. Their life is isolated from the outside world. Their father ensures their household operates under special rules created in order for his girls to be able to survive the “end of the world.” One day, a boy from a juvenile hall is entrusted with them. Gelsomina, who is talented at keeping bees and making honey, teaches him the many aspects of bee farming. Countryside Wonders, a TV show that gives prizes to homes that have best kept their traditions, comes to town, and Gelsomina convinces her family to appear in that show. Looking into a life disconnected with civilization makes the modern man look back on his own life. This film is touching for other reasons ? mainly, the struggles of a teenage girl. It is also notable for the distinctive way in which the realistic scenes and the mystic aura co-exist. Alice Rohrwacher has established herself as an important Italian director of the future with this second feature, which won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. (RHEE Soue-won)
