Program Note
With her first long feature, animator and director Signe Baumane frankly and courageously talks about the depression and madness that have afflicted many female members of her family, including her grandmother. From an autobiographical perspective, this film?filled with beautiful images?depicts depression, which has long been regarded as a mental illness, thus keeping those who are affected from talking about it. The director says that this work is about mystery and forgiveness. This amazing film by the Latvian director touches our senses with its surrealistic images and visual metaphors, and allows us to truly enjoy the unique aesthetics of Eastern European animation, which boasts its long history. The film is characterized by its exotic style in its first half filled with the beauty of nature, by Latvia’s modern history and by the twisted humor. This is a touching story of an artist fighting against madness that runs in the family. The “rocks in my pockets” symbolize pain, which could come to anyone, and a willingness to move forward despite the weight of life. (RHEE Souewon)
