Program Note
Chala is a troublemaker. Carmela, his nearly retired teacher, is the only person who knows that Chala is a mature and strong boy serving as the breadwinner for her alcoholic mother. One day, Chala is involved in an illegal dog fight to make ends meet, and his new homeroom teacher decides to send him to a correctional facility. Carmela opposes the teacher’s idea, trying to help Chala who struggles to support his mother. Nevertheless, Chala’s life doesn’t improve, and Carmela’s efforts seem to go nowhere. This coming-of-age film is about the tension between the energy of a boy approaching the turbulence of adolescence and the discipline imposed by adults. While most films resolve such a conflict in a balanced manner, Behavior doesn’t suggest any solutions. Without reaching any happy endings it reveals an existing open wound to ask if the disciplinary welfare system the only way of helping disadvantaged children? And to what extent does society need to consider a child’s free will going against the moral law of such a system? (Jin PARK)
