Program Note

Indonesian version of Darna, inspired by Darna of the Philippines. Comparing this version with Philippine’s original could be a good example of the cultural interactions and influences. This is the only superheroine film made in Indonesia and the original print archived at Sinematek Indonesia was developed specially for PIFF 2008. (Mina OAK)

Lilik Sudjio

Born in 1930, Jakarta, Indonesia, Lilik Sudjio started directing in the 1950s and continued working on various projects until the 1990s. His horror film The Queen of Black Magic is one of the first Asian horror films to reach international audiences. His filmography includes Suzie (1966), Djampang’s Search for Black Tiger (1969), Darna Ajaib (1980) and Cinta Kembar (1985).
