Program Note
Looking at Indian film beyond just Bollywood, Niogret weaves details of history, regional characteristics, contemporary celebrity, and trends with filmmaker, historian, and actor interviews to paint a picture of one of the world’s biggest film industries in the world’s second most populous country. Niogret takes his educational tour to New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, and others, along the way delving into the mystery of what defines Indian cinema when the thousands of films produced each year emerge from within socially, religiously, and politically independent ‘region-states.’
