Program Note
Following a wave a hideous xenophobic rioting in South Africa in May 2008, a group of filmmakers joined together to use cinema as a voice against racism and in favor of our humanity.
Danny Turken’s Affectionately Known as Alex questions national responsibility as he tracks the rising tensions in the months leading up to May; Angels on Our Shoulders by Andy Spitz focuses on a group of Zimbabwean teachers trying to re-establish a sense of routine for their students, and sheds light on the riots’ real impact; Adze Ugah puts a life to the name rnesto Alfabet Nhamavue, one of May ’08’s most visible victims in The Burning Man; and the Western Cape community of Masiphumelele makes a public apology to displaced foreign nationals in Omelga Mthiyane, Marianne Gysae and Riaan Hendricks’ Baraka.
