Pandora’s Box is a story of alienation and isolation. It is a story of individuals whose lives have been shaped by a sterile middle-class morality. It is a story that many people, in developing and/or developed countries touched by the inevitable combination of capitalism and modernity, can identify with. It is a kind of human landscape, both universal and singular at the same time. -Yes¸im Ustaogˇ lu According to myth, when Pandora’s Box was opened, the evils of mankind were released but so was hope. In a world consumed with affluence and industrialization, director Ustaogˇlu focuses on a three siblings forced to leave the glitz and comfort of Istanbul to find their missing mother. As they travel to their small hometown, they realize they know little of Turkey, each other, or themselves. Their mother’s disappearance becomes the catalyst for serious self-reflection on their lazy choices and what they’ve accomplished.
