Program Note
The one constant in Horten’s life is his train route, a route he has been driving for forty years. When the day comes for him to retire, he is at a loss as to how to live in the aftermath. With the same kind of subtle humor and warm touch he brought to Factotum, director Bent Hamer turns his camera toward an anonymous man embarking on a new chapter in his life. The adventures he stumbles into in the process inform Horten’s reinvention of himself as an individual as opposed to someone who is solitary. Reminiscent of Aki Kaurismaki in a distinctly absurdist Scandinavian way, Hamer’s film is a meditation on aging and living, and whether or not the two really are independent of each other.
