Program Note

Directed by 4 women, Chants of Lotus is an omnibus film dealing with a doctor contemplating an abortion for a rape victim, sexcrazed teens, a single mother struggling to keep her daughter safe, and a wife who has just lost her husband to AIDS.

Nia diNata’s film debut was the semi-colossal epic, [Cabaukan], which won her an award for Best Promising New Director in the 2002 Asia Pacific Film Festival. [The Gathering] is her second feature film and was the first Indonesian film to deal with the issue of being a homosexual in a predominantly Moslem country. diNata has a background in mass-communication and received her film training from New York University.
