Program Note
It’s December 1989, the night before the revolution. A group of soldiers are ordered to patrol the chaotic city. While hesitating with fear to against angry citizen, young Costi run away despite of Lieutenant Neagu’s caution. Costi meets a group of protesters on the way back home and his fate falls into where nothing to do with his intention. The ’89 revolution has been one of the most important subject matters as well as glorious trauma to the young Romanian filmmakers. Corneliu Porumboiu’s 12:09 East of Bucharest borrowed documentary style with full of sarcastic humor, while Caˇtaˇlin Mitulescu chose conventional narrative style in The Way I Spent the End of the World. Radu Muntean’s second feature The Paper Will Be Blue represents the shared quality found among the Romanian new talents such as low-key lighting and unpolished acting style by seemingly nonprofessionals.
