Program Note
A comic satire by Romanian helmer Cristian Mungiu: the story unfolds intertwined stories of three people: Luci, Sorina and Michaela. Luci and Sorina are young couple bankrupt with nowhere to stay but dusty street. Struggling with poverty, Sorina leaves hopeless Luci for a rich French man. Luci starts a part-time job and meet Michaela, who got dumped at her own wedding and life becomes nothing but desperate. Her parents try to set up arranged marriage with a bridegroom from ‘occident’ but Michaela starts to have feelings for Luci. In January 2007, Romania joined EU and the exodus to the northwestern European countries pervades immensely among the youth. Occident reflects the ardent desire shared by the majority of young Romanians to run away from their hometown for better future. In most of the recently produced Romanian films, it is suggested as the major factor to make people the most unhappy that the idea of wanting to escape but not able to. (Young-in LEE)
