Program Note
Winner of the Palme d’Or and the film that brought the Tavianis international acclaim, Padre padrone pivots on a young Sardinian boy’s recruitment as a sheep herder and his subsequent break from his overbearing father by demanding an education. Based on Gavino Ledda’s autobiography, the film speaks to the larger issue of mass exodus from the island by its young and a loss of childhood. An epic story of hard-won personal freedom that balances nature against culture, the past against the future, and father against son.
Director

Paolo Taviani
Paolo and Vittorio Taviani were both born in San Miniato di Pisa, Iraly, and studied at the University of Pisa; Paolo studied liberal arts and Vittorio law. The sons of an anti- Fascist lawyer, the brothers shot to international renown with their first short film, San Miniato, luglio ′44(1954), about Nazi atrocities in their home town. The brothers traditionally collaborate on screenplays and direct alternating scenes onset. Known for a theatrical, quansi-neorealist technique, the Tavianis insist their films are dramatic, reinterpretations of history that focus on the Tuscan working class. Their joint filmography includes I Sovversivi(1967), The Palme d′Or-winning Padre Padrone(1977), The Night of San Loreuzo(1982), Chaos(1984), Good Morning Babylon(1987), Fiorile(1993), Risurrezione(2001), And The Lake Farm(2007)
