Program Note
1994 was the year that marked a massive shift in South African society. It was the year of the first post-apartheid elections, and the birth of black majority rule. The time since has seen a changing, often difficult, dynamic emerge between black and white and the family at the center of Michael Raeburn’s hilarious and heartbreaking comedy saw it coming. Based on the award-winning novel by Marlene van Niekerk, Triomf exposes the country’s weaknesses and insecurities as the white Benades deal with increasing black affluence, the possibility that their home is on stolen land, and their own crushing poverty. Spoken in Afrikaans, a first for international cinema, the film “is at once parochial in setting, and universally accessible through its story about a dysfunctional family, and through an allegorical resonance contained in the change from an old world to a new one.”
