The human psyche is one of the most heavily studied yet mysterious landscapes in the world. It remains a mystery decades after Freud and Jung, and countless others. It has also been the subjectexplicit and implicit-of art for centuries. “What intrigues us the most here, is the deviation that messes up the whole, the ancillary road which separates from the main road. For example, that moment when a very brave person suddenly gets weak in the knees with fear. Or that moment when a coward suddenly turns brave. The endeavor to try to understand the human nature and ourselves and depict that through these types of deviation,” theorizes director Ceylan. In Three Monkeys, a family must deal with the carefully crafted lies that conceal truths from each other and themselves in order to remain whole. Do these falsehoods hide reality-or validate it?
