Program Note
The biblical parable of the prodigal son is an enduring one. The theme of the lost and misguided child being welcomed back into the arms of the parent has been interpreted in art, music, and literature for hundreds of years. In Azatyan and Mkrtchyan’s latest feature, the middle son of a wealthy man finds his attempt to make amends and restart his life hindered at every turn. Set in contemporary Armenia and playing out in father’s home during a dinner party, the prodigal’s elder brother is unwilling to help financially, his ex-girlfriend doesn’t want to relive the past, his friend sees him a coward, and the younger brother no longer hero worships him. Only his father is welcoming. What is right, and who is the prodigal son? Filmmaker Atom Egoyan calls the film “one of the deepest contemporary films to deal with the current state of the Armenian soul.”
