Program Note
In his follow-up to Machuca Andres Wood turns his camera toward the illusions we create in our daily lives. Edmundo is a hairdresser and a bit of a hedonist. When his heritage is called into question, it is the catalyst for an investigation of himself that informs his life. Teresa is a successful doctor with a seemingly ideal life. Then she discovers her husband is frequenting a brothel and one prostitute in particular, and it shakes her world to its foundations. Mario is part Mapuche and feels his ethnicity is a barrier to the world of the philharmonic he desperately desires. When an older man is awarded what he sees as his place in the orchestra, he becomes resentful and enraged. The three characters cross but never touch in their personal quests to understand their lives and themselves and to find a kind of peace therein.
