Program Note
In the endless quest for redemption that is really the inability of Elias’ character to forgive others and himself, religious guilt is shown to be the detonator of obsession and madness. And in the damage done to this family microcosm under the rigorous and implacable tutelage of the father, we would like to believe there is also a possible metaphor for other fanaticisms, intolerant people and intolerances, for the destructive capacity that lies in the imposition of an absolute truth, with no room for doubt, when faith is communicated through violence and power. -Rodrigo Pla A symbolic, metaphorical film about fanaticism, redemption, and devotion, Pla’s follow-up to La Zona follows one man’s descent into near-madness as he attempts to atone for a perceived sin. Told from the point of view of his youngest son, Aureliano, as he watches his father build a church designed to save his family from death.
