Program Note
Fifteen-year-old Jen and her mother Sarah have their life disrupted by the handsome Ian-a dead ringer for Jen’s father, who recently died by suicide. Until Ian’s arrival, Jen had been coasting through her life, emotionless and solitary. Daughterly affection soon morphs into something else-something that quickly becomes dangerous, problematic, and disapproved of. On an evening when Jen and Ian take a country drive, Ian’s attraction to Jen is revealed, and it becomes a source of confusion and conflict for the lonely girl: Is he a father figure or a lover? Sarah decides to take matters into her own hands and makes the situation worse. Rotger’s portrait of two grieving women trying desperately to cope with the suspicious world around them narrows its vision to just the two, and illustrates a fundamentally strong and unshakeable bond rooted in pain and familiarity, and ultimately, unconditional love.
