Program Note
When a handsome stranger comes into chronically ill Hannah’s tranquil life on the Norfolk coast, he becomes the catalyst for healing her broken family. Director David Rocksavage explains: “I wanted to portray to the audience that feeling of rediscovering a favourite childhood place, tinged with the sadness of knowing that such happiness cannot last. I also wanted to evoke the excitement of finding a new friend, perhaps from a different world-a special friendship away from the prying eyes of parents and siblings. I wanted Hannah’s love of life and the gift of her new friendship to shine through the pain of her illness and the simple joy she gets in hearing a poem read aloud to her. In the end, it’s her personality that brings the family together and in Jean Simmons’ portrayal of Hannah I seem to hear echoes of laughter from the distant past.”
