Program Note
Like his previous social drama, What the Sun Has Seen, Rosa creates a palpable tension and realism in his latest, where his characters are once again struggling to make sense of their surroundings. A couple contentedly married for many years sees their bond tested when the past rears up to inform the present. The cause of the stress is an alleged collaboration many years before with the secret police. With trust and loyalty suddenly at issue, the couple strives to avoid a complete collapse. As Rosa explains, “I am asking what scales we would need to balance, on the one hand, years of good life together, and on the other, a suspicion that one is lying and being disloyal. I am asking what to do with doubts that rise in us and grow like a rolling snowball; gathering everything and leading to disintegration.”
