Program Note
The latest film by provocative Austrian director Gotz Spielmann hinges on the random connection of four lives. Alex and Tamara live in Vienna, working in the city’s seedy sex trade. Robert and Susannah live in the idyll of the countryside a few hours away. The results of a botched robbery set Alex on an inevitable collision course with Robert. Spielmann revisits themes of atonement, guilt, and revenge and filters them through the emotions of characters that are unable to identify and corral those emotions. In an exemplar of the “Berlin School,” Spielmann’s controlled direction makes the characters’ anger, desires, and regrets palpable. The austere Revanche may not have a traditionally happy ending, but as Spielmann describes it, “there is a fundamental spark of optimism, the conviction that life isn’t a mistake, that it all somehow makes sense.”
