Program Note
Ever since Emile Zola wrote his accusatory open letter to the French president regarding the Dreyfus Affair, “J’accuse!” has been shorthand for outrage, specifically toward the powerful. Peter Greenaway, whose Nightwatching told the story of the creation of Rembrandt’s most celebrated work, “The Night Watch,” returns to the scene of the alleged crime and casts himself as an artistic detective. The painting famously depicts a victorious militia-as well as a murder-and was taken as a criticism of the Dutch elite of the Golden Age. The oligarchs then decided on a course of action to ruin Rembrandt as an act of revenge. This dramatized documentary further delves into the anti- Rembrandt conspiracy, and as it does lends credence to the theory. Itemizing the possible motives for each of the thirty-four characters in the canvas to see the artist destroyed, Greenaway uncovers more evidence than anyone has in the past.
